After Six-Hour Members’ Day Hearing, Chair DeFazio Says It’s Clear Congress Must Act on a Big, Bold Infrastructure Plan to Help Communities Across the U.S.

Washington, DC— Today, Chair of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) issued the following statement after an all-day, bipartisan hearing during which 63 non-committee Members submitted testimony to layout their districts’ infrastructure needs. The Members’ Day hearing comes on the heels of the release of the Biden-Harris administration’s American Jobs Plan, and ahead of the Committee’s plan to markup a surface transportation bill next month.

“After hearing from Members today, it has become even more clear that communities across the country—both urban and rural—need transformational infrastructure investments to improve the lives of all Americans,” Chair DeFazio said. “By modernizing our infrastructure, we can create millions of jobs, become more competitive in the global economy, make transportation more affordable and equitable, create more livable communities, and reduce carbon pollution from the transportation sector that is driving the climate crisis. This is our moment to move our infrastructure out of the Eisenhower era and into the 21^st century and beyond.”

Chair DeFazio and other Committee leaders recently announced they would accept project submissions from their colleagues for consideration to be included in the forthcoming surface transportation legislation.
