Chair DeFazio Introduces Legislation to Name the Department of Transportation After Secretary Norman Yoshio Mineta

Washington, DC—Today, Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) introduced legislation to name the federal building located at 1200 New Jersey Avenue Southeast in Washington, DC, which houses the U.S. Department of Transportation, as the “Norman Yoshio Mineta Federal Building.”

In introducing this bill, Chair DeFazio said: “Secretary Mineta is a great American patriot who has continuously answered the call of public service. As the longest serving Secretary of Transportation and also a Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I can think of no one who makes more sense to name the Department of Transportation’s headquarters in Washington, DC after than Secretary Mineta. As the child of immigrants whose family suffered the grave injustice of being sent to an internment camp during World War II, Secretary Mineta has been a true trailblazer throughout his career, including serving as Mayor of San Jose, California, 20 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, and on the presidential cabinet of two presidents from different political parties—Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. His personal history and legacy of striving to make our nation fairer and more just for all will be an inspiration to all who walk through the doors at the U.S. Department of Transportation. I look forward to working with my colleagues to get this bill signed into law.”
