Chair DeFazio Urges Uber, Lyft to Reconsider Participation at Upcoming Hearing on Serious Issues Facing the Ride Hailing Industry

Washington, DC – Today, Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) strongly urged Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and Lyft CEO Logan Green to reconsider their companies’ participation at a congressional hearing scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2019. The Subcommittee hearing, titled “Examining the Future of Transportation Network Companies: Challenges and Opportunities,” will explore a number of issues pertaining to the ride hailing industry. Both Uber and Lyft declined previous invitations for representatives from their respective companies to testify.

Citing recent news reports that raise serious questions about a wide range of issues directly and indirectly related to Uber and Lyft, Chair DeFazio wrote in his letters to Mr. Khosrowshahi and Mr. Green: “I intend to pursue legislative solutions to address numerous issues plaguing the ride hailing industry, many of which will be raised at this hearing. These include conditions governing your partnerships with States and local governments and transit agencies, the labor impacts of your business model, and disturbing reports of public safety problems among those who use your platform. If you do not send a representative to testify at the hearing, you leave the Committee little choice but to make these policy decisions without your input.”
