Announcement follows a request Chairs DeFazio and Larsen made last week
Washington, D.C. – Following the announcement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today that it will establish a Joint Authorities Technical Review (JATR) as part of its certification of the Boeing 737 MAX, Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Chair of the Subcommittee on Aviation Rick Larsen (D-WA) released the following statements:
“I am glad the FAA is heeding our call to bring in an independent body into the certification process,” said DeFazio. “Given the many serious questions surrounding the Boeing 737 MAX and the FAA’s certification process, it has become abundantly clear that an independent body must be able to review every step of the process and help restore public confidence—both in the U.S. and around the world— that all identified problems will be resolved well before the MAX is allowed to be restored to service.”
“I am encouraged by the FAA’s decision to move forward with an independent, third-party review of any safety measures related to the Boeing 737 MAX and the aircraft’s certification,” said Larsen. “An independent review will ensure thorough oversight of this critical process and improve confidence in the United States as the global standard in aviation safety.”
Last week, Chairs DeFazio and Larsen urged the FAA to engage an independent, third-party review to objectively assess the corrective measures Boeing intends to propose for the 737 MAX.
