Washington, D.C. – Today, the Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Chair of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) reacted to the United States Coast Guard’s announced policy of disqualifying service by transgender persons looking to enter the service, or those person's identified with gender dysphoria, with limited exceptions.
“We are deeply disturbed by the Coast Guard’s decision to further prevent transgender persons from serving their country. An individual’s performance in uniform is all that counts. If they want to volunteer to serve and protect our country, their gender identification should be irrelevant. Discrimination has no place in our society, much less within the branches of our military. We strongly urge the Coast Guard to reconsider,” the Members said.
