Rahall to Address West Virginians for Better Transportation Conference

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Nick J. Rahall (D-WV), top Democrat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, will discuss the importance of transportation investments while addressing the 2011 West Virginians for Better Transportation Conference on November 14, 2011, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Charleston, West Virginia.

The Committee is in the process of developing a multi-year surface transportation bill that Rahall hopes will address the growing backlog of transportation needs.  The most recent multi-year surface transportation bill (SAFETEA-LU), which authorizes highway, highway safety, transit, and rail programs, expired in September 2009, and the program has continued to operate through temporary extensions.

The Committee earlier this year held over ten public hearings and listening sessions across the country with state and local officials and transportation stakeholders to gather information from local communities to draft a new long-term reauthorization of these critical programs.  At the request of Rahall, the Committee made its first stop in the national series of hearings in his hometown of Beckley to hear firsthand about the transportation challenges facing the region.

Rahall will provide a legislative update on current attempts to reauthorize surface transportation programs and will discuss the importance of investing in America’s transportation future to create American jobs, grow our economy over the long-term, and increase our economic competitiveness.
