Ranking Member Larsen Applauds $300 Million to Improve Ferry Service in Communities Around the Country

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Rick Larsen (D-WA) applauded the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for awarding nearly $300 million for 18 projects to improve ferry service in communities across the country.

“Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, communities across the United States can enhance ferry service and modernize ferry boats and terminals—improving access to public transit while creating good-paying jobs,” Ranking Member Larsen said. “In my home state of Washington, ferries are a necessity. Federal investment in ferries means more jobs for the women and men who build and maintain ferries in Northwest Washington and more reliable and more frequent service for passengers who rely on our ferry system to get to and from work, school, the store and recreational opportunities. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to keep people and the economy moving while creating cleaner, greener, safer and more accessible public transit.”

These projects will be funded by three separate grant programs: the Passenger Ferry Program, which funds the purchase, replacement or modernization of passenger ferries, terminals and related equipment, the Ferry Service for Rural Communities Program, which supports ferry service in rural communities and the Electric or Low-Emitting Ferry Pilot Program, which supports ferry electrification and decarbonization.
