Ranking Members Larsen, Carbajal and Vice Ranking Member Garcia to Admiral Lunday: Focus on Saving Lives and Prioritizing the Workforce

Washington, D.C. —Ranking Member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Rick Larsen (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee Salud Carbajal (CA-24), and Vice Ranking Member of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee Robert Garcia (CA-42) wrote to Acting Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Lunday reminding him of the Coast Guard’s essential missions and the need to continue successful recruitment processes.

“We are deeply concerned that the administration’s narrow focus on the southern border will jeopardize the Coast Guard’s ten remaining statutory missions and put American lives in jeopardy. Surging Coast Guard assets and personnel to the border is putting tremendous strain on a service already stretched thin,” the Members wrote.

“Attempts to attack civil rights and dismantle groups and programs that promote respect and a positive work environment will inevitably reverse the progress made in recruitment efforts. Injecting politics into the Coast Guard will hurt the women and men dedicated to serving this country,” the Members continued.
