Washington, D.C.— Today, House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Ranking Member Rick Larsen (D-WA) and Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management Greg Stanton (D-AZ) sent a letter to U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) Acting Comptroller General Orice Williams with a series of questions scrutinizing the degree to which the Kennedy Center’s physical and fiscal conditions have reached a critical level and must be closed, as President Trump has claimed.
“Two months after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Congress renamed the National Cultural Center the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and established the Center as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy,” the Ranking Members wrote.
“Since its creation, the federal government has appropriated funds for the Kennedy Center for major repairs and renovations as well as its operations and maintenance program, which includes heating, cooling, lighting, routine repairs, and services such as facility security,” they continued.
Ranking Members Larsen and Stanton asked GAO to conduct a review of the Kennedy Center’s capital plan and its evolution over the past decade, whether the Kennedy Center has deferred any capital projects and the Kennedy Center’s financial status.
