Washington, D.C.—Today, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Rick Larsen (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management sent a letter to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and Comptroller General of the United States Gene Dodaro requesting an investigation after unelected billionaire Elon Musk and his staff at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) gained access to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) data and payment systems.
“When individuals register for FEMA aid and purchase federal flood insurance, they trust that their private information, including Social Security numbers, will be protected by the federal government,” the Members wrote. “Recklessly granting such information to Mr. Musk and his team puts disaster survivors’ sensitive information and identities at risk after they may have lost everything”
“Given the threats to Americans’ privacy and the national security risks posed by Mr. Musk and his team’s access to FEMA’s systems, we request GAO conduct this investigation as rapidly as possible,” the Members continued.
