Washington, DC – U.S. House Transportation Committee leaders will hold a press conference tomorrow, July 20th, to discuss the introduction of bipartisan legislation regarding the European Union’s unilateral decision to require participation of U.S. air carriers and other operators in the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme.
Committee members will detail the bill’s provisions that challenge European Union plans to impose a costly fee or emissions credit purchase on any civil aviation operators arriving or departing EU airports. Beginning on January 1, 2012, airlines will be forced to participate in this carbon dioxide emissions trading scheme despite the objections of the United States Government. U.S. airlines have also challenged the policy before the European Court of Justice as a violation of international law.
