Chair DeFazio Reacts to Trump Administration’s Proposed Rule to Gut NEPA

Washington, D.C. – Today, Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) responded to the Trump Administration’s decision to move forward with a rule to enable Federal agencies to no longer consider the environmental effects of infrastructure projects.

“When tackling new and critical infrastructure projects across the country, we need to consider the impacts to our environment. Pretending like our climate isn’t changing is reckless and costly. Today’s news that President Trump and his science denying friends have proposed a rule to gut environmental review and exclude a consideration of climate change in infrastructure planning is less than surprising. It has been a priority of this Administration to put industry interests over people. NEPA ensures the environmental impacts of a proposed project are examined and that the public has a role in the decision-making process. Not only is removing these requirements a bad idea for public health and our environment, but it will end up costing taxpayers more when projects aren’t built to be resilient. You can be sure I will use all the tools at my disposal to stop this misguided proposal,” said Chair DeFazio.
