Vice Chair of Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation 2021

Washington, D.C. — Today, Chair of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Chair of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Salud Carbajal (D-CA) announced Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) will serve as Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation in the 117th Congress. The subcommittee has jurisdiction over the United States Coast Guard, over the regulation of vessels and seamen; international conventions related to the safety of life at sea; and the regulation of ocean shipping, domestic cabotage, and the merchant marine, except as it is related to national defense.

“I am honored that Representative Auchincloss has agreed to serve in this new role and bring fresh ideas to the table as we work to bolster and grow a vibrant, diverse, and globally competitive U.S. maritime industry,” Chair DeFazio said. “What’s more, Representative Auchincloss will play a key role as we work to ensure that the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard have the resources they need to carry out their mission of protecting waterways both at home and abroad.”

“I’m excited to welcome Rep. Auchincloss as Vice Chair of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee! I commend his innovative approach to transportation and infrastructure investment -- as a tool to improve people’s lives and grow our economy in an inclusive and sustainable way,” Chair Carbajal said. “We need Rep. Auchincloss’s forward-thinking leadership and I look forward to working with him to tackle the climate crisis, create jobs, and bring our infrastructure into the 21st century.”

“Maritime transportation is critical to job creation, climate resiliency, and trade,” Rep. Auchincloss said. “The maritime industry will also be instrumental in offshore wind, a key priority for Massachusetts. I am honored to be named Vice Chair of this Subcommittee, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to craft maritime and Coast Guard policy that will allow us build back better.”
