Chairs DeFazio and Larsen Announce Hearing Next Week on 5G Deployment and its Effects on Aviation Safety

Washington, DC - Today, Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Chair of the Subcommittee on Aviation Rick Larsen (D-WA) announced the subcommittee will hold a hearing titled, “Finding the Right Frequency: 5G Deployment & Aviation Safety.”

During this hearing, members will have an opportunity to discuss the impact that deployment of 5G technologies has on the aviation industry with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Stephen Dickson and aviation and telecommunications stakeholders, who are scheduled to participate virtually.

In announcing this hearing, Chair DeFazio said: “When it comes to aviation safety, there are no do-overs. That’s why the federal government, airlines, manufacturers, the telecommunications industry, and airports must all work together on a thoughtful, strategic deployment of 5G technologies. While the recent agreement by AT&T and Verizon to delay 5G deployment near certain airports was necessary, we are now seeing the operational impacts to airline travel. All interested parties must come together to address these impacts and implement long-term solutions that will increase safety and reduce disruptions for affected airports. To that end, I hope Administrator Dickson and all of our witnesses come prepared for a robust discussion about how the goal of a successful 5G deployment can co-exist with the safety of our skies.”

Subcommittee Chair Larsen added: “Congress’ job is aviation safety. It may be inconvenient to some, but it is not inconvenient to the traveling public. I look forward to hearing from FAA Administrator Dickson, industry and other relevant stakeholders on the way forward to resolve serious concerns, ensure the safety of U.S. airspace and keep the economy moving.”

Members will appear by videoconference or in person in 2167 Rayburn House Office Building.

Additional details, including written testimony and a livestream, can be found here once available. The hearing will be livestreamed through the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure’s YouTube page.
