Ranking Member Larsen Applauds Funding to Help Under-Served Communities Advance Infrastructure Projects

WASHINGTON, DC— Today, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Rick Larsen (D-WA) applauded the U.S. Department of Transportation for announcing $23.6 million under the Thriving Communities grant program for entities that help communities to advance transportation projects by providing technical assistance, planning, and capacity building.

“All communities deserve access to the investments in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law,” Ranking Member Larsen said. “This funding will help build capacity for communities that have been historically underserved or under-resourced to develop projects that can successfully compete for infrastructure dollars. Thanks to these investments, communities can expect assistance to accelerate transportation projects in rural and Tribal communities, improve access and mobility in transportation, and tackle complex projects that will boost the economy and public health.”

Background:

The Thriving Communities grant program provides technical assistance, planning, and capacity building support to disadvantaged and under-resourced communities to help them advance transportation projects. This funding can be used to prepare grant applications, deploy community engagement plans, and implement workforce development efforts.

Under the program, DOT is awarding $23.6 million in funding to nine capacity builders: three national capacity builders that will help a total of 52 underserved communities selected by DOT, and six regional capacity builders that will support 60 communities identified by the capacity builders.
